How to Deep Clean Carpets at Home with Baking Soda and Vinegar
Florida humidity, sandy feet and pets can leave carpets looking tired and smelling musty. Before you rent a machine, try this gentle at-home method using products you already have.
What You'll Need
Baking soda
White vinegar
Clear dish soap (unscented and dye-free is best)
Warm water and a spray bottle
Clean white microfiber cloths or towels
A vacuum with a clean filter
Optional: a few drops of essential oil for a fresh scent
Step-by-Step Method
Vacuum thoroughly. Go slowly and in two directions to lift sand and pet hair from deep in the pile.
Sprinkle baking soda evenly over the carpet. Use a sifter or mesh strainer for an even layer.
Let it sit for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for strong odors. Keep pets and kids off the area.
Mix your cleaning spray: one part white vinegar to two parts warm water, plus a few drops of dish soap.
Lightly mist one section at a time. Don't soak the carpet; too much moisture can lead to mildew in our humid climate.
Blot firmly with a clean towel to lift dirt. Rotate to a clean section of towel often.
Let it dry completely. Open windows, run ceiling fans or turn on the AC to speed things up.
Vacuum once more to pick up any remaining baking soda and fluff the fibers.
Quick Fixes for Common Carpet Problems
Pet accidents: Blot, spray with the vinegar solution, cover with baking soda, then vacuum when dry.
Muddy footprints: Let the mud dry completely, then vacuum before treating the remaining mark.
Candle wax: Place a paper bag over the wax and press with a warm iron to lift it.
Gum: Harden it with an ice cube in a plastic bag, then gently scrape it off.
Always test your solution on a hidden corner first. Wool and natural-fiber rugs can react to vinegar, so check the manufacturer's care label.
How Often Should You Deep Clean?
For most Brevard County homes, a DIY refresh every one to three months keeps carpets looking great, with a professional deep clean once or twice a year. Homes with pets, beach-going families or vacation rental guests may need it more often.
